Deciding to make homemade veggie burgers one evening I went on the hunt for some vegan cheese to bung on top and came across this Violife Sliced Cheese; perfect as it looked exactly like ordinary burger cheese. Would it fool the family though?

For some time now, there has been a number of Violife products in the “free from” section of a number of supermarkets, but this was the first time I had tried any. Like most vegan cheeses it’s made from coconut oil with flavourings. However nutritionally it is probably not something I want to eat on a daily basis. Then again I don’t eat burgers on a daily basis either! On the plus side, it is fortified with Vit B12.

Starting on a positive note it looked just like sliced cheese and even had that slightly plasticated texture of burger cheese. Smell wise – well it didn’t smell of anything much which given my last post was a huge improvement. Didn’t fool the family though as they all exclaimed “is this vegan?”

On to the taste. I’d read somewhere that Violife cheeses are quite mild tasting; good ones to try if recently moved to a vegan diet. I can concur because it didn’t taste of much at all really. However, we ate it on top of a burger with ketchup and all the trimmings so the taste would have been lost a little; not having much taste is a major improvement on some of the vegan cheeses I’ve subjected the family to recently. And, as my eldest daughter said, burger cheese doesn’t normally have a lot of taste and she is quite right.

We all had a slice and it was fine. There were no complaints mostly (although the family remain to be convinced that a vegan cheese can taste at least the same as dairy cheese).  In summary if you are vegan and want a slice of cheese with your burger this brand isn’t too bad at all. Think I’ll try some of their other products as well.

The ingredients bit.
Not so revolting vegan cheese.
